Keep it simple!
Getting started on an exercise program – like any major change in a daily routine – can be a challenge!
The key to getting more fit and healthy is consistency. Exercise in some form (cardiovascular, strength or flexibility training) should ideally occur every day. But it doesn’t have to be anything complicated. There are many health benefits from something as simple as a brisk daily 30 minute walk.
And the key to consistency is finding an activity you like. Exercise shouldn’t be a chore!
If you’ve identified that you need to get off the couch and get moving, that is a great start.
Find an Activity
Think about whether you like to be active in a group setting, or on your own. Activities can vary from low to high intensity, depending on your fitness level*.

Fit it In
After finding an activity you like, the next step is fitting fitness into your routine. Try to schedule at least a half hour appointment with yourself everyday. Make this YOUR time. It doesn’t matter what time of day you exercise – but often having the same time will help you keep that appointment.
Set Goals
Set goals for yourself that are SMART – Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely. For example, a goal to run a 5 KM race that will occur in 3 months, if you have already started a running program is probably realistic. Attempting to run a marathon next week if you have never walked further than to the fridge from the couch is probably not.
Reevaluate
After a few months, take a moment to look back – have you been sticking to your routine? If not, perhaps you have chosen an activity that is hard to fit into your schedule or not optimal for your fitness level. So try something new!
